Together with RKC Waalwijk Community Champions, Mudguard hosted a series of workshops focused on creativity, confidence and self-expression. Over multiple sessions, young talents discovered that fashion is not about trends, but about telling a story that is your own.
From inspiration to creation
Between December 2024 and April 2025, Mudguard partnered with RKC Waalwijk Community Champions to host seven workshops for groups of young people aged 15 to 17. Each session brought together 15 to 20 boys and girls who stepped into a creative space where fashion became a way to express ideas, identity and ambition.
Every workshop started with an inspiration talk by Mudguard founder Kik Dekkers. He shared the full reality of starting Mudguard at 21. The wins, the mistakes and the lessons learned along the way. His message was consistent and clear. You are not just selling clothing. You are selling a story.
The workshop process
After the inspiration session, it was time to create. Participants started by collecting inspiration and building moodboards using music, images and personal references. From there, they moved into sketching, translating thoughts and feelings into visual concepts.
With guidance from the Mudguard team, these ideas were developed further and prepared digitally. The focus was never on technical drawing skills. It was about impact. Every participant had to answer one core question. Why should someone wear your design? What does it stand for?
Everyone is creative
Some of the strongest moments came from participants who arrived convinced they were not creative at all. What they discovered was the opposite. Those who doubted themselves often carried the most powerful stories. Time after time, these were the concepts that stood out. Proof that creativity lives in everyone, even if it takes the right environment to unlock it.
From concept to reality
Each group selected one winning design, chosen by the Mudguard design team together with Teun Hoefs. The winning concept was refined, made print ready and produced as a real Mudguard t-shirt.The reactions spoke for themselves. Pride. Confidence. Ownership. Wearing a piece they created themselves gave the winners something no store-bought item ever could. A story they could carry with them.
More than a workshop
These seven workshops went beyond teaching design skills. They unlocked confidence, sparked entrepreneurial thinking and showed young people that their voice matters. For Mudguard, the collaboration confirmed that fashion can be more than drops and collections. It can be a platform for growth. For RKC Waalwijk, it strengthened their mission to create lasting community impact through Community Champions. Together, we showed the next generation that style is not about following trends, but about daring to tell your own story.
